Bully Wise is a game that is commonly used by school social workers to help teach children about how to work to reduce bullying. While simultaneously playing dominoes, the children are also encountering pretend situations of bullying and describing what they would do in that situation.
Before playing a domino, the child must select a card from one of four stacks, in which they are either asked to practice a skill or answer a question about bullying. They are asked to give advice to children that are being bullied, bystanders, and even the bullies themselves. They are also asked to determine whether or not they should get help from an adult in that situation.
The first stack of cards are called the target expert cards, in which the participants learn specific non-violent actions that they can take to reduce bullying. The second stack of cards are called the bystander expert cards, in which the players learn the power of bystanders in reducing bullying and helps players learn specific actions to take to reduce bullying. The third stack of cards are called the bully expert cards, in which the players learn to teach bullies how to achieve popularity without being bullies. The fourth stack of cards are called the getting help cards in which players learn when to handle a situation on their own and when to get an adult's help.
This game would be especially useful in social skills groups in a school setting. It is a fun way of teaching kids how to stop bullying and to help bullies come up with alternate strategies to make friends other than bullying. Although this game is a fun way to teach about bullying, it should be noted that when working with students who are bullying, it will not be effect to just use this game.
